BROTHER ANDRE MEDICAL CENTER (BAMC) DANDORA

Dandora is a slum community to the east of Nairobi and is home to over 250,000 people.  March to the Top is partnered with St. Monica’s Parish, the Holy Cross Parish in Dandora, The Tabit family and the University of Notre Dame’s Ford Program to serve the Dandora community through projects like BAMC and more.

OUR WORK

Our first project in Dandora was a study that helped gauge the needs of the community as expressed by the people of Dandora themselves. As a result of this research, we provided skills training, mentorship programs, and individual grants to local entrepreneurs. In addition, we collaborated with partners to develop and sustain the Brother Andre Medical Center (BAMC) Dandora. BAMC launched in 2017 and provides maternal counseling, obstetric services, basic laboratory and outpatient care, and staff training.

WHY IT MATTERS

Maternal health is an imperative need in Dandora, where women are two times more likely to die in childbirth than in Kenya as a whole, and miscarriages, child mortality, and birth defects occur with greater frequency than in other areas of Kenya. Since its opening in 2017, BAMC is providing life-changing support for women and families in the Dandora community.

“What you help a child to love can be more important that what you help him to learn.”
