Masimba, Kenya – March to the Top, in partnership with MEAK (Medical and Education Aid to Kenya), recently completed a week-long medical mission in Masimba County. The initiative, led by Nargis Kasmani with support from Dr. Daniel Manduku (Member of Parliament) and Benson Okebe (County Director of Medical Supplies), provided vital eye and dental services to underserved communities in Eastern Kenya.

Mission Scope and Objectives

The program focused on delivering free eye examinations, cataract surgeries, and corrective eyewear, while also addressing community demand for dental services. In addition, the mission aimed to raise awareness of preventable eye conditions and strengthen local healthcare capacity through training and mentorship.

Outcomes

Over seven days, the mission team — including surgeons, ophthalmologists, dental specialists, and nurses — reached more than 3,000 individuals across Masimba and neighboring villages. Key results included:

  • 3,212 patients screened

    • 2,444 for eye conditions (cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, infections)

    • 768 for dental problems (tooth decay and related issues)

  • 262 cataract surgeries performed

  • 812 reading glasses, 300 sunglasses, and 20 photochromatic glasses distributed

  • 2,550 bottles of eye drops dispensed

  • 471 dental extractions completed

Broader Impact

The mission significantly expanded access to both eye and dental care in a region where specialized services are scarce. Patients benefited from professional treatment in safe medical settings, reducing reliance on unsafe self-treatments.

Local healthcare workers received on-site training to enhance their diagnostic and treatment skills, ensuring that knowledge gained during the mission will continue to benefit the community.

Partnerships and Future Plans

The initiative highlighted the value of close collaboration between NGOs, local authorities, and community leaders. County-level logistical support ensured efficient operations and laid the groundwork for future missions.

March to the Top and MEAK plan to build on this progress, strengthening partnerships to expand sustainable healthcare interventions across Kenya.
